Fri, 17 Dec 2010 15:48:00 -0800 Cha Cha Cha Changes http://blog.daverichard.com/cha-cha-cha-changes http://blog.daverichard.com/cha-cha-cha-changes

So there's been some changes going on in my art making lately. I've pretty much not enjoyed making it to tell the truth for almost the last year hence not updating much (because I wasn't making anything). I took a portrait class last spring which was amazing in how much I learned, but I then realized I had no emotional "feeling" in this kind of art. There just wasn't any expression or spontaneity in it. I knew what I was feeling for a while but I didn't know what to do about it.

Basically I wasn't motivated with my art. I didn't like it anymore. Any of it. A friend of mine here in NY invited me to a few "draw jams" where 5-10 people meet, bring supplies and draw, paint, collage etc. The thing that makes this amazing is everyone puts what they've been working on either on the floor or a table and anybody can pick it up and continue to work (unless a consensus deems the piece finished, which then gets tacked to the wall). Nothing is too "precious", nothing is thought out much (more stream of consciousness), and nothing is worked on for too long. This process has opened my eyes and creativity to places where I've always wanted to go but was either afraid or just didn't know how. I'm usually a pretty planned out person which I really wanted and needed to get away from in my art. This is the beginning of that process and I'm excited.

Below are a few shots from one of the draw jams.

Started a new painting. Bunnies and motorcycles! Here's the beginning underpainting. Just mixed my paints and will start color today.

Continuing to add subtle values and hues of color to build up the face. 2 more classes, gonna finish this head as much as possible. Marvin is an amazing teacher. I'm learning so much and will never look at a painting the same way again.

Here’s the first step of color from last weeks underpainting. 3 more classes til the end of class and I’m going to focus on making this as finished as I can and learn as much as I can in the short amount of time we have left.

Decided to do one more underpainting since the likeness of the model just wasn't there yet. Glad I did as this is way closer to what the model actually looks like. Pretty happy. Starting color this week and will have the remaining 4 weeks of class dedicated to finishing the color.

Img_0014

Here's my 4th wash from class. Didn't take a photo of #3. Going to start color next week. Getting better at proportions but I still tend to elongate the face a bit too much. Ah well I'm starting color on this one. Not 100% caring if it's not completely accurate since there's only 5 more classes and I need to get some color time in!

I've started painting a still life from a photo my wife took using the techniques learned from class so far. I wanted to try and get the values and hues down as close to the photo as possible. Wish I took a photo of the underpainting. I'll keep the progress updated.

Img_0010

Here's my second wash (underpainting) of the same woman slightly different angle. Proportions are better than the first wash but still not perfect. I had 2 hours less time also so I'm already seeing improvement.

Last week we started learning about color and how to mix to achieve any color you need to reproduce. It's opened up my eyes to color like I've never been able to understand before. No more guessing games.

Had my first painting session in the class I'm taking. For the next couple classes we're just concentrating on the underpainting in raw umber. We're doing a wash from a still-life model each class which is a first for me. I realy like this technique and it makes a lot of sense to get proportion and value down quickly.

I just found Jeremy Geddes’s work and am utterly amazed. Check his blog out too, very inspirational oil paintings. He does quick studies of each painting in color to get tone and composition down before committing to the large canvas. I know that’s probably a good idea, but damn I don’t have the patience for that.

I’ll be taking my first real class starting 1/29/10 at SVA in Manhattan with Marvin Mattelson. I started oil painting about 4 years ago on and off. I took a very beginner class when I first started but pretty much have been teaching myself from trial and error, books, web etc. This will be my first real technique course and I’m really excited. I’m not too into traditional portraits but I feel I need to know the fundamentals before I can go off, even if I want to paint abstractly. I’m sure what Marvin has to teach will be impactful  on my work. Stoked.

Mon, 21 Sep 2009 04:30:48 -0700 Pigmenting http://blog.daverichard.com/pigmenting http://blog.daverichard.com/pigmenting Not too long ago for my birthday my wifey bought me some dry pigments/muller/glass to start making my own paints. This not only is cheaper than buying tubes of paint, but the quality of paint is pure without any additives. Straight up pigment and cold pressed linseed oil. I bought some empty tubs the other day and will experiment with tubing the paint I've been mixing. I have to mix correctly and disperse the oil throughout the pigment and not add too much oil or else when I open the tube to go use the paint, oil with flow out without paint! not good. We'll see what happens... I went out looking for pigment stores around NYC. At first I checked out - http://guerrapaint.com/ which is fairly close to my house by subway. I went in and asked about linseed oil. The guy chuckled a bit. Soooo I guess you don't have any? Well I guess Guerra paint is all about acrylics. The guy was really nice and showed me how to mix my own acrylics and the possibilities I had no idea acrylics could achieve. BUT I paint in oils so no thanks. He did have an assortment of dry pigments though so I picked a bunch up to try. Next stop was http://kremerpigments.com which wasn't too much further away. Aaah yes, this is my kind of store. The guys were really nice there and I picked up a liter of swedish cold pressed linseed oil for $25. Seriously if you go to Pearl or Dick Blick and want to buy cold pressed, a liter will cost at least $45, no thanks.... They had everything you could want and at very good prices. I'll be back. Hopefully I'll have some work up soon. Moving was a bitch and getting settled in NYC is even harder, but I'm getting inspired finally and the studio is pretty much set up.
